Be Aware of Which Leg is Yang and Which is Yin

Taijiquan Quote of the Week

“Avoid being ‘double-weighted’ (i.e., having your weight equally distributed between both feet.) Be aware of which leg is yang (weighted) and which is yin (non-weighted). Only at the very beginning and the end of the form should the weight be evenly distributed. There must, of course, be a time in each posture during which you are double-weighted as you shift from one leg to the other, but this should be only momentary.”

There are peculiar parts of long Yang forms, whether it’s from Yang Chen Fu or Yang Lu Chan, that push us to feel the difference. Intense, slow weighting of one leg while moving in to Lift Hands for example, really pushes the sensation.

For an even more magnified Yang/Yin leg sensation: try lifting your foot flat. In other words, don’t lift toe then heel, nor heel then toe, rather, lift the whole foot as a unit… that’ll get Yin/Yang leg sensations working.

Let me know how it works…
