Breath, Structure, Motion

  • A Fundamental Workshop

6-9 pm, Friday April 11th, see how breathing supports structure and generates motion. Imagine that structure creates and eliminates breathing space, while defining and directing motions. Notice motions aligning your body’s structures, guiding your breath. Experience breath, structure, and motion inside your body. Watch breath, structure, and motion change your mind.

Workshops are limited to 12 practitioners (I reserve the right to modify this a bit). I keep it small to keep instruction close and personal and to keep location space reasonable.

Overall good feedback. Most enjoyed the details about breathing and the passive breathing initiated by another pressing on the belly. We ran using coordinated breathing: another fun bit. And we kicked each other until we felt good. -Steven Smith

I thought this workshop was a great look into the interplay of movement and motion and how each plays a part in the other. Being a taiji practitioner, I liked how the drills and exercises we practiced helped hone in on and even exagerate particular aspects of movement and breath that can, in turn, be applied to movements and breath work in the forms and drills that I practice in taiji.

Steven’s instruction honored our subjective experience of the drills and exercises. He spent time pointing out different components of a drill or exercise while leaving plenty of space for the participants to come up with and discuss their own answers based on their own experiences. I think this approach helps students develop a sense of ownership and confidence in their development rather than always defering to what their “master” thinks and/or what the “master” would have them do or think.

Thank you Steven for putting the time into constructing ths useful workshop experience. I look forward to the next one.
