My First Bit of World Taiji Boxing
By Steven Smith 24 Mar 2010
I had good fortune:
My first exposure to Taiji was with Master Erle Montaigue.
I didn’t know, then, that Tai Chi had an excessively soft reputation.
And, at the workshop in 1993, he didn’t show tension-fighting like I built years of Karate practice.
Weighty Relaxation
Mr. Montaigue had a calm, fierce presence, and he worked us through some small fighting drills at Jack and Beverly’s Saint Cloud Karate Instruction. The methods were fluid and soft, powerful and heavy. I was so impressed (and it takes a lot to impress me) that I purchased two of his first videos — MTG 01: Yang Chen Fu Form and MTG 05: Basic Pushing Hands… on VCR tapes (remember those?).
I’d trained for 8 years in the martial arts and I’d met several Masters before I worked with Erle.
He’s amazing. And he writes daring books about Taiji.
- I own almost all his books.
- And I have lots of his videos…
Through his media network I connect to the World Taiji Boxing Association in a way that I cannot connect with any other movement enterprises.
Perfect.
…especially if you crave details and solo work like I do.
