Never Be Daunted—Success Secrets

ernesthemingwayHere’s one of my favorite bits of advice. You’re welcome to use it too.

It’s from Ernest Hemingway’s the Sun Also Rises. It’s a masterpiece. A bold, straight-talking book that exemplifies Mr. Hemingway’s potent and succinct style.

Bill, friend to the main character Jake, offers advice over a few drinks…

Ought not to daunt you. Never be daunted. Secret  of my success. Never been daunted. Never been daunted in public….

Not in public. If I begin to feel daunted I’ll go off by myself. I’m like a cat that way.

You and I have lots of tools in Taijiquan and the martial arts to prevent being daunted.

In the past, I covered reflexive self-defense and bits about eagle-vision. Those help prevent feeling daunted. Other tools, techniques, and tactics do it too:

  • C-curve or straight spine
  • lighting the reptile-brain
  • relaxing
  • soft-focus
  • mirroring-matching
  • and…what else?

What do you use?

What do you want to learn about?

    daunted

An adjective meaning: intimidated, alarmed, shaken, frightened, overcome, cowed, discouraged, deterred, dismayed, put off, disillusioned, unnerved, demoralized, dispirited, downcast

So never “be” daunted as in never “show” dauntedness so to speak?

I want to learn more about why I should not appear to be daunted, which I assume is different than not being daunted, since being daunted is an emotional reaction we can’t really control it, but we can influence how we act upon it and can mediate our susceptibility to it. I see that not being daunted, or dismayed, or put off is an unrealistic option for those honest with themselves, but not appearing daunted is possible to do. But I am curious why?

What is the benefit of not appearing daunted?

Perseverance is something you must have in anything you do especially Taiji Chuan where you must weather the dry spells and keep going knowing you will soon get the benefits… Never Be Daunted

Ah yes, daunted. Never be daunted is the counsel. Never appear daunted might be realistic at first, in the vein of fake-it-til-you-make-it.

But I have soft focus (and the precise version: eagle vision). Shift mind-state to not-be-daunted. It’s not about appearances, nor faking emotions. And it’s real and honest.

Later, after tough encounters, I’ve wondered “what the hell was I doing” but, still, I cannot be daunted. Details, eh?! What stories?…hmmm…later.

Perseverence is certainly the long-term version of it. And long-term tenacity is important and amazing. But Bill means: right now…don’t be daunted. If you are daunted, slink off like a cat.

I always enjoy your articles, Steven.

“Inner Animalia” does well to sum-up my own thoughts on this matter.

  5. Josh young says:

    I don’t think I understand.
I am not sure of the right questions to ask so that I can come to understand this better.

  6. Josh Young says:

A dog ran out at me today for a second, this took me aback in the sense that i had not seen it on the other side of the shrub. The surprise daunted me by way nature, but I didn’t grasp onto that daunted feeling of surprise and thus I was not daunted by being daunted so to speak.
In this way I think I understand now.

  7. S.Smith says:

    Aha. Fantastic, Josh.

And that initial surprise-knee-jerk reaction is the one I hope all folks can learn to train/retrain in these internal arts.

  8. Heather says:

I think of daunted as being put off of one’s goal; deterred. Which I guess means if one experiences a setback, there is the goal to consider and alternative ways of reaching the goal. Or to use a well-worn phrase — finding ways to dwell in possibility.

  9. I take this to mean that you just don’t engage with the feeling of being daunted in much the same way as you don’t engage with your thoughts when meditating. You just acknowledge they are there and let them pass by. This is good. I don’t consider being daunted to be a useful state as it only serves to hold you back. Good advice if I’m understanding you correctly.

    Yes Urban Samurai,

That’s it! Not in public…I can feel the depths of dauntedness in the privacy of my personal training, my little nook, or my fear-filled mind…not in public.

    Heather,

In this context, the goal might be less intellectual, more visceral; then it’s true…don’t get put off the goal.
