Yes Urban Samurai,

That's it! Not in public...I can feel the depths of dauntedness in the privacy of my personal training, my little nook, or my fear-filled mind...not in public.

Heather,

In this context, the goal might be less intellectual, more visceral; then it's true...don't get put off the goal.

I take this to mean that you just don't engage with the feeling of being daunted in much the same way as you don't engage with your thoughts when meditating. You just acknowledge they are there and let them pass by. This is good. I don't consider being daunted to be a useful state as it only serves to hold you back. Good advice if I'm understanding you correctly.

I think of daunted as being put off of one's goal; deterred. Which I guess means if one experiences a setback, there is the goal to consider and alternative ways of reaching the goal. Or to use a well-worn phrase -- finding ways to dwell in possibility.

Aha. Fantastic, Josh.

And that initial surprise-knee-jerk reaction is the one I hope all folks can learn to train/retrain in these internal arts.

A dog ran out at me today for a second, this took me aback in the sense that i had not seen it on the other side of the shrub. The surprise daunted me by way nature, but I didn't grasp onto that daunted feeling of surprise and thus I was not daunted by being daunted so to speak.
In this way I think I understand now.

I don't think I understand.
I am not sure of the right questions to ask so that I can come to understand this better.

Ah yes, daunted. Never be daunted is the counsel. Never appear daunted might be realistic at first, in the vein of fake-it-til-you-make-it.

But I have soft focus (and the precise version: eagle vision). Shift mind-state to not-be-daunted. It's not about appearances, nor faking emotions. And it's real and honest.

Later, after tough encounters, I've wondered "what the hell was I doing" but, still, I cannot be daunted. Details, eh?! What stories?...hmmm...later.

Perseverence is certainly the long-term version of it. And long-term tenacity is important and amazing. But Bill means: right now...don't be daunted. If you are daunted, slink off like a cat.

Perseverance is something you must have in anything you do especially Taiji Chuan where you must weather the dry spells and keep going knowing you will soon get the benefits... Never Be Daunted
