Radical Self-Defense is Casual
By Steven Smith 31 Mar 2011

We already talked about this self-defense issue. But it takes some hammering.
I use Taiji for daily reminding.
Get out of your own way and you’ll realize that you already have self-defense. No training necessary. You’re already ready.
- But you trained. Poorly. (Damn it.)
We’ve been training all our lives (most people have).
We’ve gathered tension and fear and worry and shame. Every institution and so many social interactions — especially at work and school — invite us to load our minds with anxiety and fear.
So we’ve been training all our lives…to make scarce and eliminate our own self-defense, self-confidence, clarity, power, wisdom…need I go on?
Our modern culture, keeps on belittling me and us and the people that we know. If you’ve followed the horrifying U.S. leadership stories, you know what I mean. It’s time to change…
There’s a way out: Taiji for example.
Un-train.
It’s easy.
It’s really easy. Seriously…stop snickering…
Okay keep snickering.
Just because it’s easy doesn’t mean it’ll work right away. We’ve been working on stressing out for many years. So the following 3 things take…ah…remembering.
Yeah, that’s it — because, remember, self-defense is built-in. Your nervous system is hard-wired for awesomeness! You’ve only got to let it work — naturally.
Give it a whirl with this little introduction.
Yeah: right now…try these simple Taiji ideas.
Destroying Self-Defense: Stand and Relax
Remember the don’ts:
- Do not begin with tension
- Do not focus.
- Do not lean back.
And the dos:
- Relax.
- Expand your awareness (soften, sink).
- Feel forward intention.
