What’s the Big Idea?
Real Taijiquan covers 3 big ideas: Real, Taiji, Quan.
The Real in Real Taijiquan
Real means, you know, existing or occurring as fact; actual rather than imaginary, ideal, or fictitious.
Generally speaking, the T’ai Chi industry pushes ridiculous fantasies about martial-prowess and healing-powers. We won’t do that here. Instead of fantasies and other bits of mystical garbage, we’ll get into the nitty-gritty of how to practice and live for real.
And, when we get deep-down, we mean—existentially real. For more about that: explore 5 philosophies surrounding real.
Here’s the bottom line:
Because this is real, you’ll get real health & real fitness…
- That Works
- That’s Practical
- That’s Natural
And that means that when you get how Taiji works, you’ll really get it.
The Taiji Part (or Tai Chi Part)
Taiji is a word from Chinese language that means Yin-Yang or Great Extremes. Or, the cosmological term means: Extreme Beginnings of the Universe. So when we say Taiji, we mean that, in our training, we must experience and apply Great Extremes.
We go slow; we go fast (explosive).
We study violence and we study healing.
We examine closely our body, mind, and spirit, while we look far out to the horizon and deep into the night.
And this way we challenge our comfort zones, pressing the limits of our experience, just a little at a time, more and more.
Because it’s paced according to you and your abilities, Real Taiji…
- Heightens Your Awareness
- Hones Your Attention
- Develops Your Strength, Stamina, and Sensitivity
(Oh…it heightens, hones, and develops your body, mind, and spirit…)
To put it simply, Real Taiji makes you Awesome.
The Quan (or Chuan) makes it a Martial Art
Okay…it seems a bit unconventional at first…that this Taiji-thing is a martial art (especially the moving slow bit). But…slow, relaxed motion creates unconventional possibilities for speed and power (you’ll see). Back to the main point…
Quan translates from Chinese into Fist or Form or Fighting. No matter the specific words we like, it means that we must train the warrior, the self-defense, and the buttocks-kicking aspects of this art to get it right. It’s a Martial Art.
We train the warrior inside, and the warrior eventually gets brave enough, clear enough, and powerful enough to heal. The real, deep-down kind of healing…not the lose-some-weight-to-avoid-a-heart-attack kind of healing. Training in a way that provokes self-defense gives confidence, direction, and stamina to live a great, extreme existence. Warriors become Healers.
That’s the gist of it.
